Holiday

Mark had a girlfriend named June. In the 18 months they’ve been together, they didn’t once have any sexual contact due to the fact that June was raised by a conservative family. The only things they’ve ever done that came close to sexual were French kissing and fondling each other fully clothed. Needless to say, Mark did want to have sex, but he respected June enough to wait until she was ready.

On Christmas Eve, they celebrate in his apartment with a candle-lit dinner that June prepared all day for them.

Two hours later, while watching Christmas Specials on T.V. and enjoying wine on the couch, they begin to kiss. As things start to get intimate, Mark finds his hand under June’s blouse. Mark felt a bit curious because June didn’t pull his hand out this time – like she usually does.

Instead, June smiles and says, “Let’s go to bed.”

In the bedroom, she begins to undress.

“Are you sure about this, June?”

“Yes, I’m sure. Today’s a holiday… love-making becomes special that way. Merry Christmas, baby.”

It was a night they would both remember.

On New Year’s Day, after celebrating the countdown with friends, they retreated back to June’s apartment and again made love without any hesitance from June.

A few days later, June is back in Mark’s apartment.

That night, while kissing in bed, Mark slowly slides his hand down her crotch. But this time, she stops him.

“What’s wrong?” Mark asks.

“We made love those times because they were holidays — special occasions. I just don’t want this to be a regular thing and become meaningless.” June timidly answers.

“It’s ok, baby. I understand.”

Mark really did understand. But it also gave him a crafty idea.

On the 2nd of February, Mark came to spend the night at June’s with the intent to give his idea a try.

While kissing on the couch, he unzips June’s skirt.

“Mark, Please. I thought we agreed on this?”

“Today’s Groundhog Day. It’s a celebrated holiday in Pennsylvania. You did say it was fine on holidays, didn’t you?” Mark responds.

“You’re silly, Mark.” June giggles and blushes.

Mark’s idea succeeds as they move on to the bedroom.

Mark began to research on more holidays: St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Labor Day, African Freedom Day, Columbus Day, Moon Festival, Chanukah, Ramadan. Whatever holiday that existed, he found and used to his advantage throughout the entire year.

The following year, Mark feels the urge to become more experimental with their sexual intercourse. He convinces June to try different things with him. And although she wasn’t enthusiastic with some of the things he requested, she nevertheless agreed.

On the 12th of June, Mark uses the Philippine Independence Day as his rationale. This time, he wanted to try having sex in the shower. June expresses how she doesn’t think it’s a good idea, but they go on to try it just the same.

While in the shower, Mark tries a position that requires lifting. As he carries June, he slips on the wet floor and falls sideways. With June still in his arms, she hits the toilet bowl and breaks her neck.

June dies in the month of June.

Mark was completely devastated by the accident. He didn’t know exactly how to feel. He was aware that he schemed June in some way to frequently have sex with her, but he also refused to think that he schemed her at all because he really did love her.

Months pass with alcohol, restlessness, and depression.

Soon after on one rainy night, Mark is awakened by a strong wind that slams his window shut. A thunderstorm arrives and the electricity is cut off.

He checks the time on his wristwatch: It’s 3 a.m.

Suddenly, He’s stunned to feel what felt like a cold, clammy hand gently touching his foot. He turns and sees a dark figure standing at the corner of his bed.

He soon realizes the figure resembles that of a naked girl.

He also realizes that when he checked the time, the date on his watch said October 31st– Halloween.
